PTK helps in Coastal Clean-up

The SJRCC St. Augustine Campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently participated in the 18th Annual International Coastal Clean-Up. The event was coordinated with the St. Johns County Solid Waste Department, and according to the Alpha Xi Eta Chapter president Jodi Verkleir, the clean-up drew county-wide volunteers who collected more than 2,000 pounds of trash from St. Johns County beaches.

"Cleaning up our local beaches has a great impact not only on our local community but our members as well. It feels good knowing I can help in some way to clean up our environment," Verkleir said.

Chapter members arrived at Vilano Beach early September 15 to comb the beach for cigarette butts, aluminum cans, fishing line, bottles and other debris. Members had a chance to bond and share in the clean up of the coastline and to interact with other volunteers.

"I love the teamwork we share and the motivation our team brings to any project we face. Our team could move mountains if that is the goal set before us," Verkleir said.

According to Verkleir, the Alpha Xi Eta Chapter's next project involves adopting a highway.
