SJRCC Open House gives Putnam County high school students personal look at college life

St. Johns River Community College recently welcomed local high school students to its annual open house. Approximately 75 seniors participated in the annual event created to inform potential incoming freshmen of educational opportunities, scholarships, financial aid and the admissions process.

Students from Palatka, Interlachen and Crescent City high schools toured the campus and attended a performance by Florida School of the Arts students as well as presentations on the Associate in Arts (transfer) degree and Associate in Science degree programs such as nursing, computer science and architectural drafting.

Students then gathered at the campus courtyard to participate in drawings for T-shirts and a $500 scholarship. Dean of admissions and records O'Neal Williams drew the name of Crescent City Junior-Senior High School student Irma Acosta for the scholarship provided by the College's foundation office. Lunch for the open house was provided by Putnam State Bank.

Three students participating in the tour were Palatka High School's Lucas Strunk, Brittany Johns and Catie Bopp. Although this was the first time on campus for Johns and Bopp, Strunk has taken college courses through SJRCC's dual enrollment program. The program offers free college courses to eligible high school juniors and seniors on campus and at participating high schools.

The students said they signed up for the open house in order to get a first-hand look at the College and what college life will be like.

Johns, who plans to attend SJRCC in the fall, said she wanted to see what the campus was like. "I wanted to tour the campus and get information on student aid. It was really informative and it cleared up some questions I had. I now feel more prepared," Johns said. "I also wanted to see the FloArts performance."

Open registration for the summer A term begins on March 14. Summer A classes begin May 12. For more information, contact SJRCC at 312-4200 or visit the Web site at www.sjrcc.edu.
