SJRCC instructor's book selected for Book Expo 2007 in New York City

It's not easy getting published. However, St. Johns River Community College speech instructor and St. Augustine resident John Green, Ph.D. seems to have found the secret to successful writing. His book, "Elder Cool Time: The Purpose-Evolving Life Filled with the Fears, Tears, and Cheers in Facing and Embracing the Aging Process," was one of 500 books showcased at the 2007 Book Expo held recently in New York City.

Green attributes the selection of his book, which was released last fall, to its popularity on the online shopping Web site, Amazon.com. Of the three million books available on the site, Green said that Elder Cool Time has appeared within the top 100,000 on three separate occasions. An editorial review of the book on Amazon.com defines a person as "Elder Cool" if he or she decides to ̉teach others based on the wisdom of (his or her) aging process." A reader's review on BarnesandNoble.com described the book as "a wonderful book that addresses the inevitable with grace, wisdom and wit. Anyone who has parents, grandparents, or others who are elderly or who (are) approaching this time in his or her own life will be able to relate to the subject matter and will appreciate the candor with which each topic is addressed."

Green's book will also become part of a catalog available to librarians, book sellers, publishers and distributors to purchase the books or extend offers to authors. Green has taught in high school, community colleges and universities, and has been teaching at SJRCC's St. Augustine campus since 2000. "I feel blessed to have the opportunity to write and find a part of academics that I enjoy," said Green regarding the success of his work. "It is the fulfillment of a dream." Green hopes to have his second book, an untitled piece that deals with interpersonal relationships and marriage, in stores before Christmas.
