SJRCC golf classic raises funds; benefits athletic scholarships

The St. Johns River Community College Athletic Department hosted its second annual golf classic recently at the Marsh Creek Country Club in St. Augustine. Thanks to participants and sponsor Beck Automotive Group, the athletic department will begin its 2008 recruiting year with additional funds for its four athletic programs, said Athletic Director Toni Willis. "The event raised the crucial funds needed to enhance scholarships and housing packages - items that are imperative when recruiting that blue chip player," she said.

More than 65 players participated from St. Johns and Putnam counties with representatives from Beck Automotive Group, Waypoint Realty, Georgia-Pacific, Outback Steakhouse, Putnam Community Medical Center, Putnam State Bank, Crill and Palm Veterinary Hospital and Southern Therapy.

First place went to the team representing Georgia-Pacific: Billy Dunning, Wes Giles, Ashley Holmes and Ron Taylor. Second place went to the team representing Putnam Community Medical Center: Mike Aaron, Allen Anderson, Bruce Baldwin and David Sheehy. Third place went to the team representing Beck Automotive Group: Kevin Durscher, Don Holmes, Breck Sloan and Warren Wilhite.

Larry Freeman of Palatka won closest to the pin and Robert Calder of St. Augustine won longest drive. An awards luncheon was sponsored by Outback Steakhouse of St. Augustine.

The tournament follows the basketball and softball teams' most successful season, Willis said. However, the athletic programs are not all about winning the game, she added. "The college is dedicated to the positive development of young men and women through a variety of academic and athletic programs," she said. "Our student-athletes use their physical talents to obtain their college education that later secure the careers that only a college degree makes possible.

SJRCC's athletic programs are based on the Palatka Campus and consist of men's basketball, men's baseball, women's fast-pitch softball and women's volleyball. For more information about the golf classic, contact the SJRCC Foundation Office at (386) 312-4100.
