College Goal Sunday assists families preparing for college

Area students came one step closer to achieving the goal of attaining a college education recently when they attended College Goal Sunday hosted by St. Johns River Community College. Fourteen students and their families attended the event held at SJRCC's Palatka Campus, while volunteers posted at Crescent City Junior-Senior High School assisted 18 students and their families during the event.

College Goal Sunday is a free, annual statewide event created to help students access billions in federal funds available for higher education. Volunteers at each location helped college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A $500 scholarship was also awarded to one recipient at each location.

According to SJRCC financial aid director Wayne Bodiford, all participants were very appreciative of the help received. "Nearly all of the families said they could not have completed the FASFA or couldn't have completed it as well without the volunteers' assistance," said Bodiford.
