DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of business organization, management and ownership, wholesaling, retailing, advertising, international trade, employee training, compensation and labor relations, financing, risk and security markets, accounting and controls, business regulations, and taxes.
Topics covered will include:
q introduction to business today in a global environment
q starting up a business
q managing the business
q human resource aspects of business
q managing the marketing of the business
q managing information systems
q managing financial resources
q understanding government regulation, taxation, and business law
q understanding risk management with insurance
q understanding the role of the internet on business
Ø This course provides the opportunity for the student to become familiar with business formation, its terminology, and the environment in which employee and manager exist in the global economy of today.
Ø It is the student’s responsibility to let the instructor know in advance should an absence be necessary.
Ø If an absence is unavoidable, it is the student’s responsibility to pro-actively seek missing knowledge/scheduling changes. Missed classes usually results in an overall lower grade.
Ø After 5 hours of missed classes, the student's grade may be dropped by one grade.
Ø If the student wishes to drop the course to avoid an unsatisfactory grade affecting the student’s overall GPA, the student must hand in the proper form into administration on or before November 4, 2005.
Ø On-time attendance is expected. Every three days late will count as an additional day absent.
Ø No credit will be given for homework received after the class call.
Make-Up Tests:
Ø All make up tests will be given during office hours on Monday, December 5, 2005. Prior registration with instructor is required.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Students in this class must know, observe, and not compromise the principles of academic integrity. It is not permissible to cheat, to fabricate or falsify information, to submit the same academic work in more than one course without prior permission, to plagiarize, to receive unfair advantage, or to otherwise abuse accepted practices for handling and documenting information. The grade for this course includes the judgment that the student's work is free from academic dishonesty of any type. Violations or infractions will be reported to the Vice President for Student Affairs and may lead to failure of the course and other sanctions imposed by the College.
HOMEWORK: Homework will consist of reading assignments and problems assigned at the end of the chapters to be completed prior to attending the appropriate class.
· This course provides knowledge that needs to be part of the understanding of anyone interested in pursuing a career in business.
· Reading, homework assignments, and all group activity must be completed timely. (Keep the class schedule handy.)
· Each participant in a group will be expected to contribute an equal amount of effort and preparation.
· Teamwork, group discipline, respect, and consideration for the contribution of every member are essential to successful group problem completion.
BUSINESS PLAN: Development of a business plan as a group activity on the Plan-Pro software with text will be required of all students. Assignments will be given on the Plan-Pro software in preparation for the business plan presentations.
· Each student will experience first-hand the trials and triumphs of group dynamics.
· Each student will be expected to have an active role in the presentation of the group business plan.
· Each student will receive a grade by the other participants in the group as well as the overall instructor evaluation.
POP QUIZZES: Pop quizzes will be given at the instructor’s discretion to ensure timely reading of all assignments.
· The text contains terminology that needs to be readily understood by each student to ensure successful scoring on the exams.
· Pop quizzes have no make-up schedules and will be given in the first ten minutes of class.
GRADES:
Grade ranges are: A= 90-100; B=80-89; C=70-79; D=60-69; F=0-59. (Class attendance = 1st requirement)
Þ Five Examinations: 50% of grade
Þ Comprehensive Final: 15% of grade
Þ Homework/Pop Quizzes: may include up to 10% of each exam (Very important to be present for class discussions and to be prepared. Failure to comply may easily result in lower/failing grade)
Þ Group Business Plan: 35% of grade (Required to receive a passing grade)
