Course

Description:                The hands-on laboratory activities are designed to reinforce the concepts introduced in BSC 2086.  The use of human anatomical models, microscopy, and animal organ dissections will be used to assist students in understanding the anatomy and physiology of human body systems.

Required

Lab Manual:              Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab Manual, 8th Edition; Elaine N. Marieb

Additional

Lab Resource:           A Photographic Atlas for the Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory, 5th Edition; John L. Crawley & Kent M. Van De Graaff

Attendance:                To successfully complete this course, regular class attendance is necessary. Being present and on time is the responsibility of each student. Students missing one lab will be warned via the Records Office. Additional unexcused absences may result in a grade of "W".

Tardiness:                  Students not in class when the roll is checked will be marked absent. Students entering the class after the roll is taken must obtain a "Tardy Explanation Form" from the designated folder, complete the requested information, and return the form to the instructor at the end of class. The absence will then be changed to an excused or unexcused tardy. Two unexcused tardies during the term will be equivalent to one absence.

Academic

Integrity:                    Students in this class must know, observe, and not compromise the principles of academic integrity.  It is not permissible to cheat, to fabricate or falsify information, to submit the same academic work in more than one course without prior permission, to plagiarize, to receive unfair advantage, or to otherwise abuse accepted practices for handling and documenting information.  The grade for this course includes the judgment that the student's work is free from academic dishonesty of any type.  Violations or infractions will be reported to the Vice President for Student Affairs and may lead to failure of the course and other sanctions imposed by the College.

Grading:                     Grades are determined by combining scores on both lecture exams and lab quizzes as indicated below:

Ø      There will be six lecture exams administered during the term. Students absent from class during an exam must provide the instructor with appropriate documentation in order for the absence to be excused and the missed exam to be made up during the instructor's office hours.

Ø      Seven laboratory quizzes will be administered during the term. One lab quiz grade may be dropped.  Lab quizzes that are missed may not be made up.  A missed lab quiz will be treated as the lab quiz grade to be dropped.

Final Grade:                  The following criteria will be used to determine a student’s final grade in this course:

Ø      Lecture Exam Average - 75% of the course grade

Ø      Lab Quiz Average - 22% of the course grade

Ø      Class Participation and Attendance -  3% of the course grade

Final grades will be posted on the SJRCC web page at www.sjrcc.edu.  Go to “Web Services” followed by “View Grades” then follow the instructions at that site.

Holidays:                       January 16, 2006 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

March 20 – 24, 2006 – Spring Vacation

Course Withdrawal:      March 17, 2006 - Last day for student or instructor withdrawal from the course with a "W". It is the student’s responsibility to officially withdraw from a course.  Never assume an instructor has dropped you from a course.
