Required Materials:

In lieu of a textbook, each student must assemble a portable stage management kit which contains the basic office and rehearsal supplies as outlined in TPA 1600. This kit will be used in class and homework assignments and is not optional.

Additionally, each student must have a copy of all of the shows in the current semester’s production schedule.

Communication requirement:

Since portions of the class will be conducted through email and voicemail, each student is required to have functioning telephone, voicemail and email accounts which are checked on a daily basis. Homework and assignments will use these forms of communication.

Course Format:

This course works as a guided study for each student enrolled.  Students must do a stage management assignment on a major production for the semester.

In addition to their main project, all students may be assigned to other productions as ASM’s in the final phase of production as the need arises.

Production staff work will be evaluated on overall effectiveness, reliability, initiative, attitude, paperwork (Including Prompt Book) and personal growth as a stage manager or crew member.

Attendance:

By enrolling in this class the student agrees to attend all rehearsals, costume fittings, photo calls, and meetings for the given production which the production team deems necessary, including evening and weekend rehearsals unless such rehearsals interfere with another class in which the student is enrolled.  All other conflicts including work and personal will only be excused at the discretion of the supervisor of the given project. In addition the student will set up a regular meeting time with the instructor once a week during the pre-production and production process to monitor and evaluate the student’s progress, turn in homework, discuss problems, etc…

Other meetings will occur on an as needed basis for the presentation of homework and post-production evaluation.

Grading:

10% resume

10% stage management kit

20% production paperwork

40% production staff projects

20% finished promptbook

Criteria for Evaluation

Since neatness, clarity of written and verbal communication, and organization are essential to effective stage management; these characteristics will constitute the criteria for evaluation for all assignments. Additional criteria will include effective problem-solving skills, the ability to both give and follow written and verbal instructions, flexibility, reliability, initiative, creativity, persistence, and successful execution of assigned tasks.

Academic Integrity:

Students in this class must know, observe, and not compromise the principles of academic integrity.  It is not permissible to cheat, to fabricate or falsify information, to submit the same academic work in more than one course without prior permission, to plagiarize, to receive unfair advantage, or otherwise abuse accepted practices for handling and documenting information.  The grade for this course includes the judgment that the student’s work is free from academic dishonesty of any type.  Violations or infractions will be reported to the Vice President for Student Affairs and may lead to failure of the course and other sanctions imposed by the College.
