PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

          Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

          A.      Complete the process of eliminating his or her regional speech patterns.

          B.      Articulate clearly and precisely.

          C.      Continue to practice proper care of the vocal instrument.

          D.      Demonstrate in speaking and exercises proper breath support.

          E.      Demonstrate in speaking and exercises proper phrasing and breath control.

          F.      Perform effective cold readings of a wide range of writing styles.

          G.      Display an improved ability to use a wide range of pitches to effectively interpret written material.

          H.      Continue to practice a disciplined approach to life-long vocal exercise.

          I.        Work with operative words and phrasing effectively in class readings and exercises.

          J.       Properly warm-up the voice for performance.

          K.      Demonstrate improved resonance.

          L.      Demonstrate a basic proficiency in the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet as it relates to Standard American Speech.

 

GRADES

          30% IPA Tests (4 tests, lowest grade dropped)     

          20% Vocal Warm-up: Written outline and Oral presentation

          20% Class participation, quizzes, homework, drills

          30% Cold reading presentations

                            

Cold readings will be graded on the following criteria:  Articulation, key words and phrasing, appropriateness of tone or mood, overall interest level of the presentation, i.e. the student's ability to "sell" the material, hold the audience's attention etc...Overall effectiveness of characterizations and the ability to distinguish characters vocally.

CLASS POLICIES

·        Attendance is mandatory--in accordance with SJRCC policy.  Excessive absences will result in a lowering of the student's final grade (by up to 2 full letter grades) or removal from the class. 

          STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING UP WORK MISSED DUE TO ABSENCES WHETHER EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED.  IF THE STUDENT MISSES A CLASS FOR ANY REASON IT IS HIS/HER RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR REGARDING THE ASSIGNMENTS OR MATERIAL MISSED. 

 

·        Absences on test or presentation days cannot be made up except through prior arrangement with the instructor.

 

·        Excessive lateness or disruptive behavior will also result in a lowering of the student's final grade. If a student is more than 10 minutes late it may be counted as 1/2 an absence.

 

·        At any point during the semester the instructor may choose to give a pop quiz on any of the material covered in the lectures, handouts, or text.

 

·        Students will be graded daily on the class exercises and homework; these grades will be tallied for the class participation grade.

 

·        Out of the total number of cold reading grades the 2 lowest grades will be dropped. If a student misses a reading--whether excused or unexcused it will become one of the drop grades. OCCASIONALLY READINGS WILL BE HANDED OUT ON WEDNESDAY FOR PRESENTATION ON FRIDAY.

 

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students in this class must know, observe, and not compromise the principles of academic integrity. It is not permissible to cheat, to fabricate or falsify information, to submit the same academic work in more than one course without prior permission, to plagiarize, to receive unfair advantage, or to otherwise abuse accepted practices for handling and documenting information. The grade for this course includes the judgment that the student’s work is free from academic dishonesty of any type. Violations or infractions will be reported to the Vice President for Student Affairs and may lead to failure of the course and other sanctions imposed by the College.
